490th Bombardment Group

The Thundering Herd

About Us

We are a group of volunteers dedicated to remembering the men of the 490th Bombardment Group, a heavy bomber squadron drafted to the UK in 1943 from America to help with the allied war efforts.
East Anglia in the United Kingdom played a vital role in the war, being the home to many strategic bomber commands, large aerodromes for heavy bomber aircraft, and top secret missions involving experimental aircraft and weapons. There was a huge American presence here in Suffolk, England during the war and our job as a memorial group is to make sure that fond memories of the men, women, and machinery who served in the 490th Bombardment Group live on for years to come.
Take a look through this website to learn more about the 490th Bombardment Group, the work going into remembering them, and the people involved in doing so. If you’d like to see how you can help, take a look at Supporting Our Group.
